Limuru Member of Parliament Eng. John Kiragu Chege has disbursed Ksh18,141,000 in bursaries to support 2,847 Grade 10 students across the constituency, in a move aimed at keeping learners in school amid rising education costs.
The funds, issued through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), are expected to cushion families struggling to meet school fees obligations and ensure students continue their education without disruption.
Speaking during the bursary issuance exercise on Thursday, Eng. Kiragu underscored the importance of education in transforming lives and communities, urging parents and guardians to prioritise their children’s schooling.
“Education remains the strongest tool for transformation. As leaders, we must continue investing in our children to secure a better future,” he said.
The MP also linked the bursary programme and ongoing development projects in the constituency to his support for government initiatives. He pointed to key projects such as the affordable housing programme, which is nearing completion in the area, as evidence of progress made through collaboration with the national government.
Eng. Kiragu noted that continued alignment with national development goals would enable the constituency to benefit from more projects that directly improve the lives of residents.
At the same event, Limuru Division Assistant County Commissioner Ruth Obuya called on parents to play an active role in guiding their children’s education. She urged families to encourage learners to remain focused and take full advantage of the opportunities provided through bursary support.
“Parents should motivate their children to work hard in school so that they can succeed and secure a bright future,” she said.
Obuya also appealed to residents to maintain peace and unity, noting that a stable environment is critical for development and academic success within the constituency.
The bursary programme continues to play a crucial role in enhancing access to education, particularly for learners from vulnerable backgrounds. Beneficiaries expressed relief, saying the support would allow them to remain in school and concentrate on their studies without the burden of unpaid fees.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that not only supports students but also strengthens the foundation for long-term socio-economic development.
As the cost of education continues to rise, such programmes are increasingly seen as essential in ensuring no learner is left behind due to financial constraints.
