Police in Kiambu County have intensified operations against narcotic drugs and illicit brews, leading to the arrest of suspects and recovery of bhang in separate incidents in Gatundu South and Kinoo.
The crackdown, conducted by officers from the National Police Service in collaboration with National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO), formed part of a wider intelligence-led operation targeting drug hotspots across several counties. In Kiambu, the focus was on areas identified as key points for distribution and sale of narcotics.
In Gatundu South, officers on routine patrol arrested a suspect found in possession of 12 rolls of bhang concealed inside a cigarette packet. The suspect was taken into custody as police moved to dismantle drug circulation networks within the area.
In a separate operation in Kinoo, another suspect was arrested while allegedly selling bhang to members of the public. Police recovered 26 rolls of the substance during the arrest, in what authorities described as a targeted intervention to curb street-level drug trade.
Police say the operations are part of ongoing efforts to combat the spread of narcotic drugs, which continue to pose a threat to communities, particularly young people.
“These operations are aimed at protecting our communities and ensuring that those involved in drug trafficking are brought to justice,” a police officer involved in the exercise said.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. The recovered narcotics have been secured and preserved as exhibits to support prosecution.
Residents in affected areas have welcomed the crackdown, expressing concern over the rising availability of drugs in local neighbourhoods. Some have called for sustained operations to ensure long-term impact.
The National Police Service has reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against drugs and illicit brews, noting that intelligence-led operations will continue in identified hotspots.
Officials have also urged members of the public to support the fight by sharing information that can assist in identifying and dismantling drug networks.
The latest arrests highlight renewed focus on Kiambu County as part of broader efforts to curb drug abuse and maintain public safety. Police say more operations are planned in the coming days as they seek to eliminate illegal drug activities and protect vulnerable groups.
