Kiambu County has rolled out a major empowerment initiative targeting boda boda riders, with several SACCOs in Kabete Sub-County receiving financial support under the Kazi Na Boda programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration, saw boda boda SACCOs from Uthiru, Kabete, Nyathuna, Gitaru, and Muguga benefit from cheque disbursements aimed at strengthening their operations and improving livelihoods.
County officials say the programme is designed to go beyond short-term relief by building sustainable economic opportunities for riders who play a critical role in local transport and daily commerce. For many households, boda boda business remains a primary source of income, supporting essential needs such as school fees, rent, and day-to-day expenses.
Speaking during the event in Kabete, county leaders emphasised that the sector is a key driver of grassroots economic activity, linking communities, facilitating movement, and enabling small businesses to thrive. The financial support is expected to enhance the capacity of SACCOs, making it easier for members to access loans, invest in their businesses, and expand their income streams.
Riders who attended the event welcomed the move, noting that access to affordable financing has been a major challenge in the sector. Many expressed optimism that the funds will help them upgrade their motorcycles, improve service delivery, and increase their earnings.
The county government noted that organised SACCO structures are essential in professionalising the boda boda industry, promoting accountability, and improving safety standards. By empowering these groups, the administration aims to create a more structured and reliable transport sector that benefits both operators and commuters.
The Kazi Na Boda initiative is part of a broader effort by the county to support informal sector workers and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level. Officials reiterated that empowering youth and small-scale entrepreneurs remains a key priority in improving livelihoods across Kiambu.
Leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with boda boda operators, acknowledging their contribution to the county’s economy and the vital services they provide to residents every day.
As the programme continues to roll out, more SACCOs across the county are expected to benefit, marking a significant step in strengthening one of the most accessible and widely used transport sectors in Kenya.
