Boda boda SACCOs from Ndeiya, Limuru East, Limuru Central, Ngecha/Tigoni, and Bibirioni wards have received a financial boost after Governor Kimani Wamatangi issued cheques under the Kazi Na Boda Programme aimed at strengthening riders’ capital base and supporting sustainable business growth.
The initiative, which is part of the county government’s broader effort to empower informal sector operators, seeks to improve the livelihoods of boda boda riders by enabling them to expand their businesses and access structured financial support.
Speaking during the issuance of the cheques, the county leadership noted that the programme is designed to uplift SACCOs by injecting working capital that will help riders invest in better operations, increase earnings, and build long-term financial stability.
Beneficiaries from the five wards expressed optimism, saying the support will go a long way in improving their daily operations, easing financial pressure, and enabling them to better manage their SACCO activities. Many riders described the intervention as timely, especially at a time when the cost of living continues to rise.
In addition to the financial support programme, the county government announced plans to roll out further interventions targeting boda boda operators across Limuru Sub-County. One of the key initiatives under consideration is a structured programme to enroll riders who do not have driving licences into accredited driving schools.
The move is aimed at improving road safety, ensuring compliance with traffic regulations, and reducing accidents involving boda boda operators, who remain a key part of the transport sector in the region.
The county is also working on an insurance cover programme that will provide riders with protection against risks such as accidents, loss of income, and other unforeseen challenges that affect their livelihoods. Officials said the programme is expected to bring more stability to the sector once fully implemented.
County leaders emphasized that empowering boda boda operators remains a key priority, noting that the sector plays a crucial role in supporting local economies, creating jobs, and providing affordable transport to residents.
The Kazi Na Boda Programme is expected to continue rolling out across other parts of Kiambu County, with more SACCOs set to benefit in subsequent phases as the government seeks to strengthen the informal sector and promote inclusive economic growth.
