Tatu City appointed Regional Office for World Free Zones Organization

Tatu City has been named the Regional Office and National Contact Point for the World Free Zones Organization, a major recognition of its leadership in Special Economic Zone (SEZ) development in East Africa.

The announcement was made during the 9th African Economic Zones Organization Annual Meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi. The event, opened by President William Ruto, brought together over 400 experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss the future of African SEZs.

Dr. Samir Hamrouni, CEO of the World Free Zones Organization, praised Tatu City for its leadership and capacity to advance SEZ development in Kenya and the region. “Tatu City exemplifies excellence as a Special Economic Zone and will effectively support our global vision of fostering economic growth and innovation through free zones,” he said.

Solomon Mahinda, Executive Vice President of Tatu City, expressed pride in the appointment, saying it would help attract investments, promote best practices, and enhance collaboration across Africa.

As the National Contact Point, Tatu City will represent Kenya in the global free zones network, promoting cooperation among stakeholders. Its role as the Regional Office involves coordinating activities in East Africa, growing membership, and implementing initiatives from the World Free Zones Organization.

Tatu City has long been a trailblazer in SEZ innovation, governance, and sustainability. It is a founding member of Kenya’s Association of Special Economic Zones (ASEZ) and sits on the Steering Committee of the Africa Economic Zones Organization (AEZO). The city was recently recognized at the AEZO Gala Dinner Awards for its operational excellence and commitment to advancing SEZs in Africa.

Currently, 26,400 people live, work, or study at Tatu City, with a projected population of 250,000 upon full completion. It hosts 88 businesses, ranging from local enterprises to global investors. Notable recent projects include a KES 2.8 billion medical oxygen plant by Hewatele, supported by international governments and the Soros Economic Development Fund.

With this new role, Tatu City is set to strengthen its position as a key driver of sustainable economic growth in Kenya and Africa.
