Kiambu Senator Seeks Court Protection Following Gachagua Attack

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has moved to court, seeking orders to block his arrest and prosecution following chaos at a burial in Limuru last week.

The event, held at Bibirioni Boys High School on November 26, 2024, was attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Tensions escalated, culminating in alleged mob attack targeting both Thang’wa and Gachagua.

The senator claims that subsequent actions by authorities are politically motivated and part of a “witch hunt” against allies of the former Deputy President.

In a petition filed at the Milimani High Court, Thang’wa, represented by lawyer Moses Mabeya, accused the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Attorney General of abusing their powers.

“The Respondents are unlawfully targeting supporters and close associates of the former Deputy President to intimidate, embarrass, and silence them,” court documents read.

Thang’wa’s affidavit detailed alleged attempts to arrest him, which he described as politically driven. He cited a chilling encounter on November 30, 2024, when his car was reportedly blocked along Thika Road by men in unmarked vehicles who wore face masks.

According to Thang’wa, these individuals indicated plans to detain and embarrass him.

“I narrowly escaped by switching vehicles at a petrol station,” he stated. He further alleged that officers had received express orders to arbitrarily arrest or abduct him, which he described as a clear abuse of power.

The senator is seeking a conservatory order to restrain the police, DPP, and Attorney General from taking any action against him until the court determines the case. “This is a gross violation of my constitutional rights to freedom and political association,” he argued.

Thang’wa’s legal team insists that his arrest and prosecution, if allowed to proceed, would undermine democratic principles and set a dangerous precedent.
