Following days of intensive investigation into a case of theft from a motor vehicle reported on January 3rd, Starehe detectives have apprehended Charles Kuria Kamau, 30. During a search of his residence in Hilton Estate, Ruiru, authorities recovered a significant haul of incriminating evidence, including:
- 96 original Kenyan national IDs belonging to various individuals.
- 10 dummy foldable Samsung phones.
- Several SIM card plates.
- Other suspected stolen items.
Investigations revealed a sophisticated online fraud scheme. Kuria allegedly used the stolen IDs to register multiple accounts on the online marketplace, Jiji. He would then advertise genuine foldable Samsung phones, enticing unsuspecting buyers.
Upon meeting for the transaction, Kuria would cunningly swap the genuine phone with a dummy, disappearing before victims realized they had been conned and reported to authorities. Investigations pointed to the unsuspecting owners of the stolen IDs, making it difficult to trace Kuria directly.
Kuria is currently detained at Ruaraka Police Station, with DCI Starehe leading the ongoing investigation. Authorities are urging any additional victims of the scam to come forward and record their statements.
