Outrage has erupted within the National Police Service (NPS) in Limuru Sub-County, where officers were given a mere 24 hours’ notice to attend promotion interviews. This abrupt announcement has sparked accusations of unfairness and potential exclusion, throwing a dark cloud over the promotion process.

The controversy stems from a letter issued on December 8th by the sub-county commander, Mr. Philip Mwania. The letter, referencing a directive from the Deputy Inspector General, informed officers of interviews scheduled for the same day – leaving many scrambling to prepare or even rearrange existing commitments.

Disgruntled officers, speaking anonymously, expressed concerns that the rushed timeline disproportionately affects those unaware of the opportunity. They fear qualified candidates could be unfairly disadvantaged, while those with prior knowledge may gain an unfair edge. This raises serious questions about the transparency and integrity of the entire promotion process.

Adding fuel to the fire, the categories targeted for promotion include Chief Inspector, Station Commanders, and Non-Commissioned Officers – crucial positions within the NPS. The specific requirements for each rank, outlined in Mr. Mwania’s letter, further heighten the sense of injustice among those who feel they were denied a fair chance.

Attempts to reach Mr. Mwania for comment proved unsuccessful. However, the NPS spokesperson has confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to address the concerns raised by Limuru officers. This probe, hopefully, will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the last-minute interviews and ensure adherence to proper procedures in the future.

Beyond the immediate controversy, the Limuru incident highlights deeper concerns about fairness and transparency within the NPS. Police promotions have long been a contentious issue, with accusations of favoritism and lack of due process plaguing the system.
