Mob attack in Thika sparks fresh security concerns

A middle-aged man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after he was attacked by a mob along Kwame Nkrumah Street near the KRA Roundabout in Thika Town.

The incident occurred after the man was reportedly accused of stealing a mobile phone. Witnesses said members of the public descended on him, leaving him seriously injured before police officers intervened.

According to reports, officers who were on routine patrol within the town were alerted to the incident and quickly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the man with severe injuries and immediately arranged for him to be taken to hospital for urgent medical attention.

His condition was reported to be critical at the time he was admitted for treatment.

The incident has once again brought into focus growing concerns over insecurity and mob justice within Thika Town. Residents say cases of muggings, theft and attacks by criminal gangs have become increasingly common in some parts of the town, especially during evening hours and in busy public areas.

Many residents have expressed concern that frustration over rising crime is leading some members of the public to take the law into their own hands, resulting in violent confrontations and mob attacks on suspects before investigations are conducted.

Community members have urged security agencies to intensify patrols and strengthen crime prevention measures to address the growing insecurity. They argue that improved police visibility and faster responses to incidents could help restore confidence among residents and reduce cases of mob justice.

The latest incident has also sparked debate on the dangers of mob justice, with residents noting that suspects should be handed over to law enforcement officers rather than subjected to violence. Human rights advocates have repeatedly warned that mob attacks can result in serious injuries, loss of life and the punishment of innocent people.

Local leaders have also called for closer cooperation between residents and security agencies to tackle crime while ensuring that the law is followed.

As investigations continue, police are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft and identify individuals involved in the assault.

The attack comes at a time when concerns over security remain a major issue for many Thika residents, who are calling for decisive action to address criminal activities and ensure public safety.

For now, the injured man remains in hospital receiving treatment as authorities continue with investigations into the incident and the events that led to the mob attack.
