Tea dispute in Gatukuyu ends in deadly stabbing

Residents of Gatukuyu Shopping Centre in Gatundu North are mourning the death of a 26-year-old kiosk operator who was allegedly stabbed following a disagreement over payment for a cup of tea.

The victim, identified as Emmanuel Bwayo, was attacked on Sunday morning at the kiosk where he earned a living selling tea, coffee and snacks to customers in the busy trading centre.

According to preliminary police reports, the suspect had ordered a cup of tea before a disagreement arose over payment. Witnesses said the situation quickly escalated into a heated confrontation after the customer allegedly declined to pay for what he had consumed.

Investigators say Bwayo repeatedly asked the man to leave the premises, but the argument intensified instead of cooling down. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the young businessman on the left side of the neck.

The attack shocked traders and customers who were going about their normal activities at the shopping centre. Efforts were made to save the victim’s life, and he was rushed to Igegania Level 4 Hospital for emergency treatment.

However, medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police officers later visited the scene and launched investigations into the circumstances that led to the fatal attack. Detectives documented the scene and collected statements from witnesses as they began piecing together events leading to the incident.

Authorities say the suspect fled immediately after the stabbing and remains at large. A manhunt has since been launched as police intensify efforts to track him down and bring him before the courts.

The body of the deceased was transferred to General Kago Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The killing has left residents of Gatukuyu in shock, with many struggling to understand how a disagreement over a small amount of money could end in the loss of a young life. Community members described Bwayo as a hardworking businessman who interacted with customers daily and was well known within the area.

The incident has also reignited concerns over violent crime and conflict resolution within communities. Residents have called on members of the public to avoid resorting to violence during disagreements and instead seek peaceful ways of handling disputes.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist in identifying or locating the suspect to cooperate with investigators.

As detectives continue pursuing leads, family members, friends and fellow traders are now left grieving the sudden death of a young entrepreneur whose life was cut short in tragic circumstances.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish all the facts surrounding the fatal stabbing.
