Medical Interns to Begin Posting on July 1, Ministry of Health Confirms

The Ministry of Health has announced that medical interns will be posted starting July 1, 2025. The decision ends months of uncertainty and protests over delayed placements.

In a statement released on April 29, the ministry outlined the placement process. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) will conduct an online balloting exercise on April 30. Interns will receive their results immediately, and the final placement list will be released by May 2.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale assured graduates that the government remains committed to supporting their careers. He acknowledged past frustrations and promised smoother transitions into healthcare facilities.

The announcement follows months of tension between the ministry and medical professionals. On March 18, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) led protests in Nairobi, demanding immediate placements and a Public Officer Medical Fund to support healthcare workers.

Salary disputes have also fueled unrest. KMPDU insists interns should receive Sh206,000, as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). However, the government had proposed Sh70,000. The matter remains unresolved, but CS Duale pledged to consult with key stakeholders to find a solution.

Interns will undergo 13 months of training. Their rotations will include internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and community health. The Ministry assured that all placements will be in accredited facilities to guarantee quality training.
