Key suspect arrested in MP Charles Were’s murder: DCI

Kenyan police arrested the motorbike rider who helped assassins kill Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Ong’ondo Were. The MP was shot dead on April 30, 2025, in Nairobi’s evening traffic at the City Mortuary roundabout on Ngong Road. A gunman fired at him and quickly escaped on a motorbike.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that officers arrested Amos Barasa Kasili, the rider who transported the shooter. Detectives tracked him down in Kibera, Nairobi, after forensic analysis placed him at the crime scene. Authorities also recovered the Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number KMFZ 413W, which he used to follow the MP’s vehicle before fleeing with the gunman.

Kasili, a habitual criminal, had been posing as a boda boda operator. When officers interrogated him, he admitted that he helped the killers. He revealed that the masterminds hired him and paid him Ksh. 50,000 for his role in the crime.

Investigators discovered that the murder was planned in advance. CCTV footage showed the motorcycle near Parliament Buildings, trailing the MP’s car before the attack. Detectives believe that a criminal network with significant financial backing orchestrated the killing. They are now pursuing a police officer and close associates of the slain MP, who may have played a key role in the assassination.
