Brace for chilly days ahead: Kenya met warns of cold, showers and gusty winds across several counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather advisory warning of continued cold weather, intermittent showers, cloudy skies, and strong winds in various parts of the country, starting August 1 through August 5.

According to the forecast released on July 31, residents in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi and Kiambu, should prepare for overcast mornings, occasional light rainfall, and chilly nights, with temperatures dipping to as low as 6°C. Daytime temperatures in these regions will hover between 26°C and 27°C.

The alert also highlights risks along the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya, where strong southerly to south-easterly winds may exceed 25 knots (about 46 km/h). Coastal communities and mariners are urged to exercise caution due to possible disruption to sea activities and the risk to light structures.

In western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin, particularly in Kisumu, Kakamega, and Nakuru, residents should expect scattered afternoon and evening showers, accompanied by thunderstorms. Temperatures in this region are expected to reach highs of 31°C.

For North-eastern counties such as Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, the department predicts sunny and dry weather throughout the week, with temperatures peaking at 35°C. Similarly, Turkana and Samburu will remain hot and mostly sunny, with occasional showers expected from Sunday.

In the South-eastern Lowlands, which include Machakos, Kitui, and Kajiado, cloudy mornings will give way to sunny afternoons, with daytime temperatures ranging from 30°C to 31°C.

Meanwhile, the Coast, including Mombasa, Lamu, Kilifi, and Kwale, is expected to see light showers mainly in the mornings and afternoons. Temperatures in the region will range between 20°C and 30°C.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged the public to stay warm, particularly in highland regions where nighttime temperatures will be significantly low.

“We encourage residents, especially in the Highlands East of the Rift, to prepare for extended periods of cloud cover and cold. Take necessary precautions, particularly during early mornings and late evenings,” said the department in its advisory.
