Residents decry health hazards from clogged sewerage in Kiambu town

Residents of Kiambu Town have expressed outrage over raw sewage and filth clogging open drainages, warning that the situation poses a serious health hazard and could trigger outbreaks of airborne and waterborne diseases.

The stagnant waste, which locals say has remained unattended for over two months, emits a foul stench and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, creating unbearable living conditions for tenants in nearby rental houses.

John Njoroge, a house manager at Marvelous Apartments, said the blocked drainages are now overflowing towards the residential premises.

“We have reported the matter to the county government, but nothing has been done. The smell is worsening by the day,” he lamented.

Jane Wangui, a trader at the nearby market, said the stench has driven customers away, fearing possible contamination of food items sold in the area.

“People are avoiding buying from here because they think the products are unsafe,” she said.

David Mathenge, a long-time resident, accused the Kiambu County Government of neglect despite collecting revenue from residents.

“It is unfair for the county to keep charging license fees while failing to provide basic sanitation services,” he said.

For some traders, the situation has already cost them their livelihoods. Alex Adabi, a maandazi seller, revealed he was forced to abandon his kiosk.

“I couldn’t stand the smell. Several other traders have also shut down because of the health risks,” he said.

The affected open drainage channels run from Kiambu Kangangi Market, past Kiambu Primary School, through several rental blocks, and eventually empty into a river downstream. Residents are now demanding urgent intervention by the county government to unclog the sewers and restore proper sanitation in the town.
