Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala is facing fresh trouble after a man lodged a formal complaint at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over remarks he made about the President’s family.
The complainant, Stanley Mwangi Wairimu, visited DCI headquarters in Kiambu on Tuesday, August 19, demanding Malala’s arrest. Mwangi vowed to remain at the offices for as long as necessary until officers take action.
Malala ignited outrage last week after suggesting that President William Ruto should feel the same pain parents go through when they lose children to extrajudicial killings.
“The US has begun investigating the recent extrajudicial killings; that’s why President William Ruto is pushing for compensation. He now wants to compensate the families of those who died. The question we are asking William Ruto is, how much is enough to compensate for a dead child? Is it 2, 5, or 10 million? As Kenyans, we want to fundraise that amount, Ksh10 million, then give it to you, your child dies, and you see whether it will be enough compensation for a dead child,” Malala said.
Mwangi described the comments as disrespectful to the Presidency and submitted both documents and video evidence to support his case.
“I have travelled from Nyandarua to the DCI Headquarters in Kiambu because I am very saddened by what Malala says. Even if he hates the President, then let him at least respect the President’s office,” Mwangi said.
He further called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to act against political leaders who make inflammatory remarks.
“If no action is taken over the letter, documents, and evidence I have presented to the DCI, then I will camp here for the whole week. I will demonstrate here until Malala is arrested,” Mwangi warned.
While insisting that freedom of speech must be upheld, Mwangi urged politicians to exercise restraint and respect in their public utterances.
“To the politicians, Kenya belongs to all of us. Let’s give the leaders a chance to work for us, and when it’s time for politics, you are free to politic,” he added.
