Cancer patients in Nairobi staged a peaceful protest outside the Social Health Authority (SHA) headquarters in Upper Hill on Tuesday, calling for an immediate review of the government’s medical cover for cancer treatment.
The protesters, carrying placards and blowing vuvuzelas, demanded that SHA revise the current allocation of Ksh550,000 per household, saying it falls far short of meeting the real cost of cancer care including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and medication.
According to the patients, the funds currently allocated can barely sustain treatment beyond the initial stages, leaving many families in financial distress and forcing some to discontinue critical therapy.
“Cancer treatment is expensive, and the current cover cannot even cater for a single full cycle for most patients,” one protester said.
Reports indicate that the demonstration, which began mid-morning, temporarily disrupted traffic flow in the Upper Hill area as protesters chanted and waved flags outside SHA offices.
SHA has maintained that its annual allocation for cancer treatment stands at Ksh400,000 per person per year, with an additional Ksh100,000 provided for diagnostic tests such as PET and PSMA scans bringing the total household benefit to Ksh550,000.
The Authority added that there are no limits on the number of treatment sessions within the allocated amount.
Meanwhile, health workers under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program also held a separate protest on Tuesday, demanding permanent and pensionable employment terms, as well as gratuity.
The workers were seen marching from Green Park Terminus toward Afya House along Cathedral Road, Nairobi, to present their grievances to the Ministry of Health.
Both demonstrations underscore growing frustrations in the health sector, with patients and workers alike decrying what they term as insufficient support from the government.
