EACC moves to recover Ksh813 million from Governor Kimani Wamatangi, 13 others over irregular road tenders

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has filed a case in the High Court seeking to recover Ksh813 million from Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and 13 others over alleged irregular award of road construction tenders.

According to the commission, the funds were irregularly obtained from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) between the 2018/19 and 2021/22 financial years.

Investigations revealed that Governor Wamatangi, who then served as Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Roads, Transport, and Housing, allegedly influenced the awarding of contracts to five companies linked to him.

EACC claims the firms used forged documents and falsified technical qualifications to secure multi-million-shilling tenders. The commission further alleged that the governor concealed ownership of the companies by transferring directorships to relatives and proxies while maintaining control over their bank accounts.

“The investigations revealed a clear pattern of concealment and abuse of office designed to misappropriate public funds through fraudulent tenders and false declarations,” EACC said in a statement.

The five companies reportedly received more than Ksh726 million from KeNHA and KURA, and another Ksh86 million from KeRRA.

The anti-graft agency insists the payments were unlawful and amounted to proceeds of corruption. The case has been filed before Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, with the first hearing set for November 18, 2025.
