The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned Boyd Were and Philip Aroko, the leading contenders for the Kasipul parliamentary by-election, amid escalating violence threatening the credibility of the upcoming polls.
IEBC Chair Erastus Ethekon confirmed on Friday, November 14, that hearings will start on Monday, November 17, with the Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee tasked to determine whether disqualifications are warranted. The summons follows two deaths and multiple injuries linked to clashes between rival campaign factions.
The unrest erupted after suspected assailants attacked Boyd Were’s campaign event in Opondo, Central Kasipul, injuring his security personnel and damaging property. Boyd accused his opponent’s supporters of orchestrating the attacks, while Aroko countered, blaming Were’s team.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja assured that investigations are ongoing, emphasizing that authorities are committed to ensuring safe and credible polls scheduled for November 27. The IEBC has repeatedly warned that violence could lead to disqualification, placing the by-election’s future in jeopardy.
