Nyeri dairy farmers gain 12 solar-powered bulk milk coolers boosting daily milk processing and income growth

Nyeri dairy farmers have received a major boost with the handover of 12 solar-powered bulk milk coolers by Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe. The coolers, distributed on Friday, November 15, 2025, at Mwicwiri Centre in Kieni, are set to benefit over 3,600 farmers in Kieni and Mathira constituencies.

Each unit will facilitate the processing of an additional 30,000 litres of milk daily, valued at Ksh1.35 million, while the annual milk processing capacity is expected to rise to 10.95 million litres, generating an estimated extra Ksh492.8 million for farmers.

Kagwe highlighted that the solar-powered coolers will save farmers Ksh3.3 million in energy costs, establish new aggregation hubs, stimulate local business, and create employment opportunities. He also urged farmers to register under the Kenya Integrated Agricultural Management Information System (KIAMIS) to access subsidized farm inputs, including fertilizer and seedlings.

Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga and local leaders Njoroge Wainaina, Eric Wamumbi, and Wambugu Wainaina attended the handover, reiterating government support for dairy farming in the county.
