Stakeholders unite to support preterm babies as Okoa Malaika Foundation expands neonatal care across Kenya

Makueni County hosted a powerful demonstration of compassion and commitment to maternal and newborn health on Monday, November 17, 2025, as stakeholders joined efforts to support preterm babies. The World Prematurity Day event, themed “Give preterm babies a strong start for a hopeful future,” was held at the Makueni Mother and Baby Hospital and highlighted nationwide initiatives to improve neonatal care.

Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, praised Kenya’s dedication to preterm care, noting that “every life is precious, and every family deserves warmth and hope.” She reaffirmed China’s continued support for Kenya’s maternal and child health programmes, citing technical collaboration and training initiatives.

The Ushiriki Wema Foundation, through its Okoa Malaika initiative, handed over six neonatal equipment units to hospitals in Makueni, Machakos, and Kitui, strengthening intensive care for vulnerable infants. Tessie Musalia, Chair and Patron of the Foundation, urged governments to extend maternity leave for mothers of preterm babies, stressing that supporting mothers directly benefits children, families, and the nation’s future.

Makueni First Lady Anita Mutula, appointed Eastern Region Okoa Malaika Brand Ambassador, called for joint action to ensure preterm babies receive adequate care. The programme, now active in 22 counties, continues to provide incubators, training, and advocacy, ensuring fragile lives receive the warmth and protection they need to survive and thrive.
