Gretsa University in Thika granted full charter as new Chancellor vows tech-led reforms to boost innovation and industry training

Gretsa University has entered a new chapter after finally receiving a full charter, ending nearly two decades of operating under an interim status. The milestone is expected to accelerate the institution’s transformation into a centre of innovation, technology-driven learning, and stronger industry partnerships.

The charter was approved by President William Ruto two days earlier in Nairobi, where he urged all universities to embrace Artificial Intelligence across teaching, research, and administration to remain globally competitive.

During the ceremony, Gretsa also installed a new Chancellor, Charles Klasoon, a former medical-technology industry executive with decades of experience in leading companies that manufacture medical devices. Klasoon pledged to guide the university toward a future anchored on digital transformation, technological advancement, and market-ready solutions.

He said his industry background positions him to help Gretsa strengthen its innovation ecosystem and deepen collaborations with sectors that rely on emerging technologies.

Outgoing Chancellor Dr. Kibathi Mbugua, who presided over his final graduation ceremony, described the awarding of the full charter as a turning point that opens fresh opportunities for the institution. He encouraged the Gretsa community to support the new leadership and take full advantage of the expanded academic autonomy that comes with the charter.

With its new status, Gretsa University is now expected to scale up research, modernize academic programs, and align more closely with Kenya’s digital transformation agenda a shift stakeholders say will benefit both students and industry.
