KWS dismisses claims Ritz-Carlton Safari Camp blocks wildebeest migration, affirms protection of key Maasai Mara wildlife corridors

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has firmly rejected claims that the newly developed Ritz-Carlton Safari Camp in the Maasai Mara is obstructing the spectacular annual wildebeest migration.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 27, the agency said the allegations circulating online were inaccurate and misleading. KWS clarified that the luxury camp is located within a designated low-use tourism investment zone as outlined in the Maasai Mara National Reserve Management Plan (2023–2032).

“The Ritz-Carlton safari camp is situated within a designated tourism investment low-use zone, as provided for in the Maasai Mara National Reserve Management Plan, 2023–2032,” KWS noted.

The agency emphasized that the wildebeest migration one of the world’s most iconic wildlife spectacles remains under the highest level of government protection. KWS said national efforts to safeguard wildlife corridors demonstrate a long-term commitment to preserving the integrity of the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

“This commitment is demonstrated through ongoing national initiatives, including the recent Cabinet approval to secure the Nairobi National Park–Athi-Kapiti wildlife corridor, among others,” the statement added.

KWS reiterated that the government remains focused on protecting all existing wildlife routes, including those linked to the wider Maasai Mara landscape, amid increasing public scrutiny over tourism developments in the reserve.
