National Government launches Ksh800M Mumbi Stadium construction in Murang’a, promising youth jobs and a modern regional sports hub

Construction of the long-awaited Ksh800 million Mumbi Stadium has officially kicked off in Murang’a, marking a major boost to the government’s plan to expand sports infrastructure and grow youth talent across the region.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who presided over the groundbreaking, said the modern 10,000-seater facility sits on seven acres and is expected to be completed within one year. He noted that the project not only aligns with the national sports development agenda but also guarantees direct economic benefits for Murang’a residents.

The stadium’s design features a standard football pitch, an eight-lane tartan running track, VIP pavilions, changing rooms, parking space and holding rooms. It will also host auxiliary courts for volleyball, basketball, handball and netball, making it a multi-sport complex.

Mvurya emphasised that manual labour will be sourced locally, ensuring young people from Murang’a and neighbouring areas benefit from employment opportunities throughout the construction period.

Murang’a is also set for additional sports investments, including the 10,000-seater Gakoigo Stadium, the 5,000-seater General Kago Stadium in Kangema, and two sports academies in Miriira and Kabati.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi lauded the partnership between the National and County governments, saying the project will elevate Murang’a as a regional sporting hub and attract athletes and visitors from across the country.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata welcomed the development, reaffirming the commitment to prioritise local residents for job opportunities and urging communities to support the project. He described the stadium as a transformative investment with the potential to stimulate business growth and enhance social and economic wellbeing.

Leaders expressed confidence that the Mumbi Stadium will become a centre of sporting excellence, open new economic pathways, and position Murang’a as a host for high-profile national events once operational.
