Ichung’wah hosts farmers ahead of global summit

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has held high-level talks with leaders of the Kenya National Farmers Federation (KENAF) ahead of a major global agriculture summit set to take place in Nairobi in June 2026.

The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming World Farmers’ Organisation engagements, which are expected to bring together key stakeholders in the agriculture sector from across the globe. Discussions centred on how Kenya can leverage the event to strengthen its agricultural systems and create more opportunities for local farmers.

Ichung’wah emphasized the need for practical and farmer-focused solutions, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of Kenya’s economy and a key source of livelihood for millions of households. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers, farmers’ organisations, and development partners to address long-standing challenges in the sector.

Among the key issues discussed were innovation in farming practices, access to markets, and policies aimed at improving productivity and profitability for farmers. The leaders also explored ways to ensure that Kenyan farmers benefit directly from the international engagements, including exposure to new technologies and global best practices.

The Kenya National Farmers Federation, which represents farmers across various value chains, plays a critical role in advocating for farmers’ rights and interests. Their involvement in the preparations is expected to help align the conference agenda with the real needs on the ground.

Also present at the meeting was Senator Alexander Mundigi, the Vice Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, who reiterated the Senate’s commitment to supporting policies that uplift the farming community. He underscored the need for stronger legislative backing to address challenges such as fluctuating prices, climate change impacts, and access to affordable inputs.

The Nairobi summit is seen as a significant opportunity for Kenya to position itself as a leader in agricultural innovation within the region. Leaders expressed optimism that the engagements will not only boost the country’s profile on the global stage but also deliver tangible benefits to local farmers.

Ichung’wah reaffirmed his commitment to championing farmer-centric policies, saying that meaningful transformation in the sector can only be achieved through inclusive and well-coordinated efforts.
