Chania Girls Renamed M.P. Shah Chania Girls High School in New Stakeholder Partnership to Boost Infrastructure and Performance

Chania Girls High School, Thika, has been renamed M.P. Shah Chania Girls in honor of its founder Mr. Meghji Pethraj Shah (M.P. Shah), a businessman and philanthropist.

The school, originally known as MP Shah High School from its inception in 1962 until 1967, was renamed Chania High School. It served both girls and boys, offering boarding and day schooling, and was the only institution in Thika that catered to a diverse range of students from various cultural, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

In 2000, the school split into Chania Boys’ High School and Chania Girls’ High School to serve boys and girls separately. Its establishment was envisioned to empower young women through quality education and has grown into a cornerstone of education for girls in the region, fostering an environment that encourages personal growth, leadership, and critical thinking.

During the official renaming of the school on Tuesday, Principal Mary Mwangi highlighted the Shah family’s pivotal role in the school’s infrastructural growth. She pointed out the recent construction of two modern classrooms and an ablution block, which have significantly eased congestion and provided a conducive learning environment for learners.

Accompanied by the school’s board members, Mrs. Mwangi also revealed that the institution is set to benefit from a borehole drilled by the Kenya Defence Forces, Thika Barracks. She described the project as a significant boost for the school, which has been grappling with acute water shortages caused by frequent rationing by the local water service provider.

Mrs. Mwangi reiterated that all stakeholders are committed to providing a well-rounded education that not only focuses on academic achievements but also emphasizes the importance of character development and social responsibility.

During the unveiling of the new name, Mr. Binoy Meghraj stated that the Shah family will continue providing financial assistance for the school’s infrastructural development to accommodate the increasing number of students effectively.
