A family in Kiambu County is calling for an independent investigation into the death of a young student who allegedly died by suicide while in police custody at Kiambu Police Station, under circumstances they describe as unclear and inconsistent with the official narrative.
The deceased, Brian Njunge Ndungu, was a student at Kiambu National Polytechnic pursuing architecture studies and had recently moved into an apartment within Kiambu town.
According to his family, Brian had been arrested over allegations of theft involving household items belonging to a neighbour, including a MacBook laptop, a gas cylinder, a computer mouse and two umbrellas.
However, the family says the events leading up to his death raise more questions than answers.
Speaking outside Kiambu Police Station, Brian’s sister, Claire Njambi, recounted how the situation unfolded from the morning of the incident.
She said Brian first received a phone call from a man who introduced himself as an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). According to her, the caller questioned him about the alleged theft before the conversation ended abruptly following what the family described as an argument.
Later in the day, the family claims their mother received another call informing her that Brian had been arrested and was being held at Kiambu Police Station.
The family says they immediately rushed to the station and arrived shortly before noon.
“When we arrived at the station, we met two women who introduced themselves as a chaplain and a counsellor,” Njambi said. “It was there that we were informed of the sad development before being escorted to the cell where we found his body.”
The family alleges that upon viewing the body, they noticed blood stains on Brian’s clothing, signs of bleeding from the nose and excessive sweating, which they say raised serious concerns about the circumstances of his death.
Brian’s mother, Susan Wambui, described her son as a quiet and focused young man who had recently begun his studies and had no reason to be involved in theft.
“I want justice for my son. We have not been given a proper explanation other than being told he committed suicide,” she said.
The family has also raised questions over inconsistencies in the details provided by police regarding the alleged complainant and the structure of the apartment where Brian lived.
They claim police indicated that the complainant lived on the ground floor while Brian occupied the first floor. However, after visiting the premises, the family says they established that the complainant actually occupied the first floor while Brian lived on the second floor.
They also noted that Brian had only moved into the apartment three weeks earlier as he adjusted to his studies.
The family is now urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other relevant investigative agencies to launch a thorough and independent probe into the incident to establish the true cause of death.
