Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, has officially launched Kenya’s first national rollout of Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), signaling a major step in the fight against HIV.
The launch, held today, was attended by key health officials including Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, NASCOP CEO Dr. Andrew Mulwa, Director of Family Health Dr. Issak Bashir, and Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi.
Representatives from international partners were also present, including Dr. Jacqueline Kitulu, Dr. Richard Amenyah, Dr. Neema Kimambo, Jennifer Galbraith (USG), and Mary Nyaguthi (AHF).
Lenacapavir provides an innovative, people-centred HIV prevention option, reducing the need for daily oral PrEP and improving adherence. The initiative underscores Kenya’s commitment to ending the HIV epidemic and scaling up modern prevention solutions across the country. Officials said the phased rollout will focus on high-risk populations and integrate with existing health programs to maximize impact.
