Kabete Polytechnic Closed Indefinitely Following Student Protest

Kabete National Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely following a daylong student protest on Tuesday, September 17. Chief Principal Patrick Muchemi issued a notice directing students to vacate the premises immediately.

“This is to inform you that the Polytechnic has been closed indefinitely. You are required to vacate the Polytechnic with immediate effect,” the notice read.

Earlier in the day, chaos erupted as students blocked major roads and lit bonfires in protest of additional exam fees, imposed on top of regular tuition charges. The demonstrations brought traffic to a standstill along Waiyaki Way, prompting police intervention from the nearby Kabete Police Station.

Students expressed anger at what they described as unjustified fee hikes. They claimed that accommodation fees had risen from Sh5,000 to Sh8,000, forcing many to seek alternative housing outside the institution.

Additionally, they protested against new exam fees, with students being charged between Sh1,000 and Sh5,000 per paper, along with an extra Sh2,000 for practical exams.

One student said, “They are saying those of us with examination fee arrears will not be able to sit the exam,” adding that the move contradicts a Ministry of Education circular that stipulates exam costs should be included in tuition fees.

The students also accused the school administration of ignoring their concerns about the rising cost of education and demanded the resignation of Principal Muchemi.
