Kiambu County’s Deputy Speaker, John Njiru was arraigned in a Thika court on charges of soliciting a Ksh130,000 bribe from a private developer. While Mr. Njiru denies the accusations, the court has imposed a Ksh1 million bond with the option of a Ksh500,000 cash bail for his release.
Mr. Njiru is accused of demanding a bribe from a private developer in exchange for allowing them to continue construction on their plot. The alleged bribe amount is Ksh130,000, significantly lower than the Ksh1 million bond imposed by the court. Mr. Njiru has pleaded not guilty, maintaining his innocence.
The potential charges if found guilty are that, Mr. Njiru could face severe penalties including imprisonment, removal from office, and potential disqualification from holding public office in the future.
The case could also damage his reputation and erode public trust in the Kiambu County government since bribery allegations against public officials undermine public trust in government institutions. Therefor a fair and transparent legal process is crucial to determine Mr. Njiru’s guilt or innocence.
Investigations will continue to gather evidence and determine the facts of the case. The court will schedule hearings to allow both sides to present their arguments where a final verdict will be reached based on the presented evidence.
