Limuru Member of Parliament John Kiragu Chege has renewed calls for stronger legislation and coordination in Kenya’s road safety framework, citing the urgent need to curb rising road accidents and protect lives.
Speaking during a National Road Safety Policy Dialogue held on Thursday, November 6, Kiragu who sits in the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure said Kenya must move from reactive to preventive road safety measures.
The forum, themed “Strengthening Partnerships and Legislation for Safer Mobility in Kenya,” brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society, media, and development partners to review the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2028.
Kiragu underscored the need for better post-crash response, enforcement of existing traffic laws, improved road design, and designated walkways and cycling lanes to safeguard pedestrians and cyclists.
He revealed that his proposed amendment to the NTSA Act seeks to establish a unified national framework for transport safety regulation, accident investigation, and prevention a move aimed at closing coordination gaps between transport agencies.
“Many road deaths are preventable. We must enhance collaboration, strengthen emergency response, and invest in safer infrastructure,” he said, adding that road safety begins with personal responsibility and must be supported by effective governance and public education.
Kiragu reaffirmed his commitment to reducing fatalities by 50% by 2030, aligning with the National Road Safety Action Plan’s goals.
