MKU unveils advanced humanoid robot to boost AI training, deepen research, and equip students with future-ready tech skills

Mount Kenya University has unveiled a cutting-edge educational humanoid robot, marking a major step in its efforts to expand Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and research. The Walker E robot, presented at the Thika campus by MKU Founder and Chairman Prof Simon Gicharu, is expected to play a central role in strengthening hands-on learning for students pursuing technology-related courses.

According to the university’s Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics, Dr John Kamau, the robot will help students test new AI algorithms, train it to perform complex tasks, and explore language-based interactions turning theoretical learning into practical experience.

The university says the new equipment will be used across undergraduate classes, postgraduate research, capstone projects, and technical programs to elevate learning outcomes and ensure students graduate with industry-ready skills.

Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi noted that the robot aligns with MKU’s renewed strategic direction, which places AI at the heart of teaching, research, and innovation. The institution has already rolled out new AI-driven programs, including Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Prof Jaganyi said the robot will support “learning by doing,” benefiting students who struggle with traditional lecture-based methods and improving their competitiveness in the global job market.

In addition to unveiling the humanoid robot, Prof Gicharu also commissioned a fully equipped ambulance, dental skills lab tools, engineering apparatus, and new library resources. He encouraged students to fully utilise the facilities, saying they open doors to limitless opportunities in the evolving tech landscape.

Students who interacted with the robot expressed excitement, noting that the new investment will boost their practical skills and prepare them for a dynamic and competitive industry.
