MP Gathoni Wamuchomba Alleges Government Cover-Up in Ongoing Juja Hyena Crisis

MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has ignited a fresh wave of controversy surrounding the persistent hyena attacks in the Juja Sub county, alleging a potential government cover-up.

In a post shared on her X account today, Wamuchomba expressed suspicion that the government’s reluctance to address the hyena threat may be linked to hidden motives.

“It’s now clear, there is a sinister motive behind the predator hyenas of Juja,” Wamuchomba wrote. Reflecting on her visit to Flati village in Nyacaba, alongside the area MP, she shared her belief that the hyenas could be part of a scheme to conceal certain dealings. “No wonder the government is reluctant to eradicate them,” she added.

Her post also highlighted a troubling advisory from wildlife officials, who reportedly instructed locals not to kill the hyenas, citing the possibility that the animals may be rabid. “What do you do with rabid wild hyenas?” Wamuchomba asked, hinting at the danger these animals continue to pose.

With 16 lives already lost to hyena attacks, Wamuchomba fears further tragedy, particularly the loss of children. “Must we lose the 17th person to these beasts? Worst of all, innocent children?” she wrote, expressing frustration and alarm at the community’s growing desperation.

These remarks come after Kiambu leaders, including Wamuchomba and Juja MP George Koimburi, pledged to pay Juja residents Ksh20,000 for every hyena they hunt down. During a prayer service in Nyacaba village, where locals mourned the loss of a five-year-old boy to a hyena attack.

Despite previous efforts by the authorities, including Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officers, the hyenas continue to roam the villages, terrorizing residents.

Wamuchomba’s statement concludes with a pointed reflection: “God help me not to think harder,” implying that there may be deeper issues at play behind the failure to neutralize the threat.
