Kenyan lawmakers are calling for urgent intervention to address deteriorating conditions in prisons across the country, shining a spotlight on a justice system in dire need of reform.

Overcrowded cells, poor sanitation, and limited resources dominated parliamentary debate this week, as MPs cited ongoing human rights violations and structural challenges to prisoner rehabilitation.

With many facilities operating well beyond capacity, inmates face cramped living conditions and little access to rehabilitation programmes or counselling. Lawmakers argued this environment only deepens the cycle of crime, leaving former inmates unprepared for reintegration into society.

Health risks are also rising, with preventable diseases spreading in facilities that lack clean water, proper meals, and adequate medical care, further impacting the mental and physical well-being of prisoners.

During a heated parliamentary session, Embakasi Central MP Mejja Donk Benjamin demanded an urgent audit of the Prisons’ Appropriations-in-Aid (AiA) account, questioning alleged mismanagement of revenue generated from prison industries.

Prison staff are also grappling with burnout, overstretched resources, and low morale. MPs have called for better training, fair remuneration, and improved working conditions to empower wardens and maintain order in correctional facilities.

Lawmakers now want the government to allocate more funds for infrastructure upgrades, modernised facilities, and policies that uphold the dignity of all prisoners. They also stressed the importance of partnering with NGOs and international agencies to fast-track reforms.

Beyond inmate welfare, the debate reflects Kenya’s commitment to justice and human dignity. With mounting pressure on the government, there is growing optimism that long-neglected prisons may finally see transformative change.
