Njoro Girls Senior School in Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely following unrest sparked by the death of a Form Four student.
Tension erupted on Monday as parents and residents staged protests outside the school, demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the death of 18-year-old Brenda Akinyi. Police were forced to disperse crowds as demonstrations intensified, leading to a brief standoff.
The student later died at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after reportedly falling ill while at school. Her family has accused the institution of negligence, claiming she did not receive timely medical attention and that they were not informed promptly despite living nearby.
However, education officials have dismissed claims of negligence, saying preliminary records indicate the student had a history of illness. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with an autopsy scheduled to establish the cause of death.
