A dispute has erupted in Ruiru, Kiambu County, over the expansion of the Ruiru Vocational Training Centre (VTC), with residents accusing some government officials of attempting to sabotage the county-funded project.
The standoff intensified after several construction workers at the site located within Githunguri Ranching Primary School grounds were arrested and briefly detained at a local police station before being released.
Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kimani wa Nduta, who led residents in erecting a perimeter wall around the facility, accused unnamed political leaders and national government officials of frustrating the project spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration.
According to Kimani, the county government plans to establish a cabro-making plant at the two-acre parcel of land allocated by the Githunguri Constituency Ranching Land Buying Company for the VTC. The facility sits between Githunguri Ranching Primary and Secondary Schools.
The MCA alleged that a section of Members of Parliament from Kiambu had teamed up to undermine projects initiated by the county government, while some were allegedly duplicating similar initiatives for political mileage.
He further claimed that the National Land Commission (NLC) appeared to have taken sides in the dispute, siding with those opposed to the project.
However, when contacted, Ruiru Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too said the NLC had already intervened in the matter and would soon issue an official position regarding the disputed boundaries between the three public institutions.
The project, once completed, is expected to enhance youth training and job creation in Ruiru and its neighbouring wards by offering technical and vocational skills.
