TIFA poll reveals 48% of Kenyans doubt IEBC’s ability to ensure credible elections before 2027

Almost half of Kenyans have no confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2027 General Election, a new poll has revealed.

According to the survey by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA), 48% of respondents said they do not believe the commission can deliver free and fair polls. Only 36% expressed confidence in IEBC, while 16% were undecided.

The survey was conducted between August 23 and September 3, 2025, through telephone interviews with 2,024 respondents across nine zones, including Mt Kenya, Nyanza, Coast, Nairobi, and Northern Kenya. The margin of error stood at +/-2.17%.

The poll results come barely two months after IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon and six commissioners were sworn into office at the Supreme Court Buildings. The new team includes Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

During his swearing-in, Ethekon pledged to safeguard public trust by ensuring that every vote counts. He emphasized that credible elections form the backbone of democracy and urged Kenyans to use their votes to secure a peaceful future.

The findings underline the task ahead for the commission, which is under pressure to restore credibility following criticism over its handling of past elections. With less than two years before the next General Election, public confidence remains one of IEBC’s biggest hurdles.
