Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi Faces Senate Committee Over Audit Queries

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi appeared before the Senate Committee of the County Public Investments and Accounts (CPIC) yesterday to address audit queries concerning various county funds.

The audit focused on the Bursary, Emergency Fund, and Jiiunue Funds, raising significant concerns regarding their management and utilization.

The Senate Committee is also considering summoning former Kiambu governors, Ferdinand Waititu and James Nyoro, to provide further insights into the misappropriation issues highlighted by the auditor for the years 2018 to 2021.

This move aims to shed light on financial inconsistencies and ensure accountability for the funds allocated during their tenures.

In the Auditor General’s report on the County Executive of Kiambu for the year 2022/2023, several irregularities related to Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s flagship project were highlighted. The report details concerns surrounding undelivered supplies and questionable spending:

  1. Undelivered Chicks:
    • Ksh 18 million was spent to purchase 60,000 one-month-old chicks.
    • Only 22,500 chicks were delivered, leaving 37,500 unaccounted for and resulting in a potential loss of Ksh 11.25 million.
    • No explanation was provided for the missing chicks.
  2. Other Irregularities:
    • The county spent Ksh 81.8 million on certified seeds, breeding stock, and live animals, with questionable deliveries.
    • Ksh 16.5 million was paid for undelivered coffee fertilizers.
    • Ksh 34.8 million was allocated for maize seeds, but only Ksh 20.3 million worth were received.
    • Additional undelivered goods were procured from the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Center.

The 2022/2023 auditor’s report is also awaited for review. This report will be crucial in determining the current state of financial management in Kiambu County and addressing any ongoing issues.
