Kiambu County has officially launched a countywide distribution of eggs, fortified uji flour and milk to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners, in a move aimed at improving nutrition and boosting learning outcomes among young children.
The programme, which kicked off this week, is set to run through to Friday, targeting ECDE centres across the county. The initiative forms part of the county government’s broader strategy to ensure that learners are healthy, energised and ready to fully participate in classroom activities.
Education officials say the feeding programme is designed to address nutritional gaps that often affect young learners, particularly in public ECDE centres. By providing a balanced diet that includes proteins and essential nutrients, the county hopes to enhance concentration levels, attendance and overall academic performance.
For many families, especially those facing economic challenges, the programme offers critical support by easing the burden of providing daily meals for their children. Parents have welcomed the initiative, noting that it not only supports learners’ health but also encourages consistent school attendance.
The rollout of the feeding programme follows an earlier intervention in January, where the county distributed free exercise books and pencils with erasers to all ECDE centres. The learning materials are expected to support pupils throughout the academic year, ensuring that lack of basic supplies does not hinder their education.
County officials have reiterated that these initiatives are part of a long-term commitment to strengthening early childhood education by creating a supportive and conducive learning environment. They emphasised that investing in young learners lays a strong foundation for future academic success and personal development.
Teachers across the county have also expressed optimism, noting that well-nourished learners are more attentive and engaged during lessons. They believe the combined efforts of providing both nutrition and learning materials will significantly improve classroom experiences.
As the distribution continues, the county government has assured residents that it will maintain consistency in implementing such programmes to benefit all ECDE learners.
The initiative underscores Kiambu County’s focus on holistic education, where both academic needs and learner welfare are prioritised. By addressing nutrition and access to learning materials, the county aims to give every child an equal opportunity to succeed from an early stage.
