Residents of Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County have been warned to remain vigilant after two lionesses escaped from Nairobi National Park and were sighted near Sholinke Trading Centre, roughly 8 kilometres from the park boundary.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said on Wednesday, January 7, that rangers and veterinary teams have been dispatched to track, safely dart, and relocate the lions back to the park. Residents are urged to avoid the area, keep children indoors, and immediately report sightings via 0800 597 000 or WhatsApp 0726 610 509.
This is not the first wildlife escape in the area. In 2025, lionesses were captured near residential areas in Ongata Rongai after venturing beyond their natural habitat, prompting warnings about public safety near wildlife corridors. KWS reiterated that public safety remains the top priority while the operation continues.
