The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a security alert cautioning its citizens against a planned demonstration expected near its Gigiri premises in Nairobi.
In an advisory released on Tuesday, January 13, the embassy said the protest is reportedly linked to recent United States military action in Venezuela, which has attracted global attention and criticism.
According to the alert, social media posts have called for demonstrations in the vicinity of the embassy on Wednesday, January 14, urging people to protest the U.S. operation.
The planned protest follows a U.S. military raid conducted earlier this month in Caracas, Venezuela, which resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Maduro was later transferred to the United States, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy, drug trafficking and weapons offences.
The embassy advised U.S. citizens to avoid crowds, monitor local media for updates, maintain a low profile and remain alert to their surroundings.
It also urged citizens to stay in close contact with family and friends as a precaution.
The advisory comes amid reports that Kenyan activists and left-leaning groups have expressed solidarity with Venezuelans, while linking the protests to broader regional and global political concerns.
The U.S. Embassy said it continues to issue security advisories to safeguard the welfare of its citizens living in Kenya.
