The national government has begun the distribution of three million bags of fertiliser to support farmers ahead of the long rains expected to start in March.
The consignment was flagged off at the Port of Mombasa under the 2026 Long Rains National Fertiliser Subsidy Programme, with the Ministry of Agriculture targeting more than seven million farmers across the country. Authorities say a total of 12.3 million fertiliser bags will be distributed throughout the year.
Under the subsidy programme, the fertiliser price has been capped at Ksh2,500 per bag to ensure affordability for both smallholder and large-scale farmers. Since 2022, the government has invested about Ksh40 billion in fertiliser acquisition and subsidy.
Officials assured farmers that all fertiliser has been certified by relevant agencies and tailored to specific crops, soils and regional conditions. County governments will work with national agencies to ensure last-mile distribution, especially in remote farming areas.
