Kenya ramps up efforts to end preventable maternal and newborn deaths through UHC reforms

Kenya has intensified efforts to curb preventable maternal and newborn deaths by strengthening primary healthcare systems and accelerating the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Speaking in Nairobi during the gala dinner of the 4th International Symposium on Streptococcus agalactiae Disease (ISSAD 2026), Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protecting mothers and infants through targeted health interventions.

The symposium, which brought together global health experts, focused on strategies to tackle Streptococcus agalactiae infections and other contributors to maternal and neonatal complications.

Muthoni underscored the need for prevention-driven approaches, integrated maternal and newborn care, and strengthened surveillance and laboratory systems across the country. She noted that expanding community health services remains central to ensuring expectant mothers and newborns receive timely and quality care, especially at the grassroots level.

The Principal Secretary also called for stronger partnerships among government agencies, researchers, healthcare workers and development partners to ensure scientific evidence translates into practical solutions.

She emphasised that sustainable progress will depend on collaboration, innovation and consistent investment in frontline healthcare systems.

“Every mother and every child deserves the healthiest possible start in life,” Muthoni said, adding that Kenya remains committed to reducing maternal and newborn mortality through bold policy action and inclusive health reforms under the UHC agenda.
