Wamatangi rejects pressure over county resources

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has claimed that ongoing attacks against him are politically motivated and aimed at forcing him to surrender control of county resources and align himself with certain political interests.

Speaking in Thika Town during the commissioning of solar-powered streetlights and newly completed hospital wards, the governor maintained that he would not be intimidated into abandoning his leadership principles or compromising service delivery to residents.

Wamatangi said he has faced numerous challenges in recent months, including court cases, threats and the demolition of his business premises earlier this year. Despite the pressure, he insisted that his focus remains on development projects and improving the lives of Kiambu residents.

According to the governor, attempts to frustrate him are linked to his refusal to give in to demands that could expose county resources to misuse.

“You can see how I am being pursued from all sides. There are numerous cases against me in court, and I have even faced gunfire at my home. They came and destroyed the business I established in Nairobi. Their intention is to intimidate me so that I can join their political camp,” Wamatangi said.

The governor questioned whether leaders should compromise their principles for political convenience, saying he would rather remain firm than allow public resources to be mismanaged.

“Do you want me to give up, or should I stand firm as a man and declare that I will not hand over resources or give bribes so that people can like me?” he posed.

His remarks come months after the demolition of several businesses, including a restaurant and car wash associated with him, during an operation conducted in January this year.

At the time, Wamatangi described the exercise as political persecution and maintained that he had legally occupied the property for many years under a lease agreement.

“I started here in 1994 washing cars before growing the business over the years. I took a 65-year lease from Kenya Railways and have faithfully met my obligations,” he said after the demolition.

However, Kenya Railways defended the operation, saying the land was being repossessed as part of preparations aimed at improving transport infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite the controversy, Wamatangi said he remains committed to delivering development projects across Kiambu and will not be distracted from serving residents.

The governor reiterated that his administration’s priority is improving healthcare, infrastructure and other essential services while safeguarding public resources for the benefit of county residents.
