Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained why he did not attend the burial of Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johanna Ng’eno, saying his personal principles could not allow him to sit alongside leaders he accuses of mistreating the lawmaker while he was still alive.
In a strongly worded tribute shared after the legislator’s death, Gachagua described Ng’eno as a close friend, political ally and confidant who stood firm in defending the interests of his community despite facing intense political pressure.
According to Gachagua, the late MP spent years boldly championing issues affecting his people and was often isolated politically for speaking openly about what he believed was marginalisation of the Kipsigis community.
However, the former Deputy President said he made the difficult decision not to travel to Emurua Dikirr for the burial ceremony because doing so would have forced him to sit alongside individuals he believes persecuted the outspoken legislator during his lifetime.
“I am abhorred by the hypocrisy of those who tormented him in life and now pretend to mourn him in death,” Gachagua said in the emotional tribute.
He claimed that some of the leaders now mourning Ng’eno were the same people who subjected the MP to humiliation and political pressure while he served in office.
Despite skipping the burial, Gachagua said he deeply mourns the loss of a courageous leader whom he described as fearless and committed to defending the interests of his community.
The burial ceremony of the late MP attracted several top leaders from across the political divide. Among those who attended were President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya.
Also present was Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, who is the father-in-law of the late MP.
Ng’eno died on February 28 after a helicopter he was travelling in crashed in the Chepkieb area of Mosop in Nandi County. The aircraft went down at around 4:45pm, killing all six people on board.
Those who lost their lives in the crash included Kenya Forest Service ranger Amos Kipngetich Rotich, photographer Nick Kosgei, teacher Robert Kipkoech Keter, Narok County government protocol officer Wycliffe Kiprotich Rono and pilot Captain George Were.
Preliminary findings released by security officials indicated that the helicopter was flying at a low altitude before it struck trees and crashed.
Earlier, while speaking during a church service in Nyandarua, Gachagua claimed that the late MP had faced significant political pressure during last year’s impeachment process against him.
He alleged that Ng’eno once visited him late at night while distressed over threats allegedly issued by a senior government official, urging him to support the impeachment motion.
According to Gachagua, the MP eventually signed the motion after being convinced that opposing it could put him and his family at risk.
