Ngenda Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Joe Kigara has called for urgent intervention to address the lack of sewerage infrastructure in the ward, warning that the situation poses serious environmental and public health risks to residents.
Speaking during a plenary session of the Kiambu County Assembly chaired by Deputy Speaker Hon. Njue John Njiru on March 10, 2026, the County Assembly Minority Leader requested a formal statement from the County Executive Government seeking immediate action to address the growing sanitation challenge.
Hon. Kigara said the ward has experienced rapid population growth in recent years, largely driven by the development of numerous private housing estates by property developers. According to him, the rapid expansion has outpaced the available sanitation infrastructure.
“As a result, untreated effluent is increasingly being discharged into road drainage systems and surrounding residential areas, posing serious sanitation, environmental and public health risks to residents,” he told the Assembly.
The MCA further expressed concern that several estates lack proper waste management systems such as bio-digesters and are not connected to sewer lines. He warned that the absence of proper waste disposal mechanisms is putting additional strain on the already limited sanitation infrastructure in the ward.
Through his statement request, Hon. Kigara asked the relevant County Executive Department of Water and Environment to provide a comprehensive report outlining measures being taken to ensure both ongoing and future housing developments are properly connected to sewerage systems.
He also sought clarification on plans by the county government to expand sewer infrastructure in order to keep pace with the ward’s growing population and increasing housing developments.
The Ngenda MCA further urged the county government to enforce environmental and building regulations to ensure developers comply with sanitation standards. He questioned what immediate steps are being taken to address the environmental and health hazards caused by untreated waste being discharged into public spaces and neighbouring communities.
In addition, Kigara called for the development of long-term strategies, including policy and legal frameworks, to guide sustainable waste management and environmental protection in rapidly urbanising areas such as Ngenda Ward.
Following the request, Deputy Speaker Hon. Njue John Njiru directed that the matter be referred to the County Assembly Committee on Water, Environment and Natural Resources for further review.
The committee’s Vice Chairperson, Hon. Macharia Wambui, assured the Assembly that the committee will investigate the matter and table a response within 21 business days.
