Kiambu County has reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare services following high-level talks with officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
Governor Kimani Wamatangi hosted both national and county union leaders led by Secretary General Dr Davji Bhimji Atellah, where discussions centred on the implementation of the October 2025 return-to-work formula, doctors’ welfare, promotions and broader collaboration in strengthening healthcare delivery.
During the meeting, both parties reviewed progress made since the signing of the agreement that ended a doctors’ strike last year. According to the county leadership, the implementation of the return-to-work formula has been progressing steadily, with key concerns raised by healthcare workers being addressed.
Top among the issues discussed was the welfare of doctors, including working conditions and career progression. The county government acknowledged the need to continuously improve terms of service to ensure healthcare workers remain motivated and effective in service delivery.
The meeting also explored ways of enhancing cooperation between the county administration and the union to avoid future disputes and ensure stability within the health sector.
Governor Wamatangi highlighted major strides made by the county in expanding healthcare infrastructure as part of efforts to improve access to quality services. He noted that six new Level Four hospitals have already been constructed and are at various stages of completion.
In addition, the county has put up 26 Level Three hospitals, which are currently being equipped ahead of full operationalisation. A further 28 existing health facilities are also undergoing upgrades to improve service delivery across the county.
To support the growing infrastructure, the county has invested in modern medical equipment in existing facilities and recruited more than 100 new doctors to strengthen service provision.
The governor said the ongoing investments are aimed at reducing pressure on major hospitals while bringing services closer to residents at the grassroots level.
He emphasised that collaboration with healthcare workers and their unions remains key to achieving sustainable improvements in the sector.
The engagement signals continued efforts by the Kiambu County Government to address long-standing challenges in the health sector while building a stronger and more responsive healthcare system for residents.
