Three arrested in Kakamega over defilement cases

Police in Mumias East Constituency, Kakamega County, have arrested three suspects in connection with two separate incidents involving the alleged defilement of 10-year-old girls.

The suspects, including a boda boda operator, are currently being held at Shianda Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities confirmed that both victims sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at different health facilities within the region.

Mumias East Police Commander Dorice Chemoss said the first incident involved a minor who had left her home in the Dorofu area of neighbouring Bungoma County. The girl was reportedly heading to Shianda in search of her mother when she encountered a man who lured her to his residence. Police allege that the suspect, together with an accomplice, committed the offence.

In a separate incident, a Grade Six pupil from Mwitoti Junior Secondary School was reportedly attacked while on her way to school in the Ekero area. According to police, a 30-year-old boda boda operator is suspected to have committed the offence, leaving the minor with serious injuries.

The two cases have sparked concern among residents, with renewed calls for increased vigilance and stronger measures to protect children from harm. Authorities have reiterated the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious behaviour and ensuring the safety of minors.

Police confirmed that the three suspects — identified as Brighton Anyembe, Solomon Amwoka and Martin Salasya — will remain in custody pending their arraignment in court. Investigators are also working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

Commander Chemoss assured the public that the cases are being handled with the seriousness they deserve, noting that protecting children remains a top priority for law enforcement agencies.

“These cases are deeply concerning, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served,” she said, urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to educate children on personal safety.

The incidents have once again highlighted the urgent need for collective action to safeguard children, particularly those travelling alone or in vulnerable situations. Authorities continue to call on communities to play an active role in preventing such crimes and supporting victims.
