Opposition gives PS Omollo 24 hours to resign over Osotsi attack

Pressure is mounting on Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo after opposition leaders issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding his resignation following the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, speaking on Thursday, April 9, accused the PS of being linked to the assault and called for his immediate exit from office. He warned that failure to resign by Friday morning would trigger further action, including calls for President William Ruto to dismiss him.

Kalonzo claimed that Omollo’s name has repeatedly surfaced in incidents involving violence against leaders opposed to the government, arguing that stepping aside would be the most honourable course of action.

“If he does not resign, his boss should fire him. If that does not happen, we will pursue both,” Kalonzo stated.

The opposition’s demands were echoed by several leaders who attended the press briefing, calling for swift arrests of those involved in the attack. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi urged police to act decisively, saying the perpetrators were well known and should already be in custody.

Siaya Governor James Orengo also criticised what he termed as slow progress in investigations, despite CCTV footage circulating widely showing the incident. He expressed concern over the lack of arrests, raising questions about the commitment of security agencies to handle the matter.

Senator Osotsi was attacked by a group of youths in Kisumu on Wednesday while at a local establishment. Footage from the scene shows the legislator being overpowered and assaulted before managing to escape. He was later airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment due to the injuries sustained.

Leaders allied to the senator have described the attack as politically motivated, linking it to a broader pattern of intimidation targeting government critics. Orengo alleged that the incident mirrors previous confrontations involving opposition figures, pointing to what he described as organised efforts to silence dissenting voices.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also condemned the assault, directing blame at the Interior Ministry and demanding accountability over what he termed as rising cases of violence against political leaders.

The latest developments have intensified the political tension surrounding the incident, with opposition leaders maintaining that justice must be served and those responsible held accountable.

As the deadline issued by the opposition approaches, attention now shifts to the government’s response and whether decisive action will be taken to address the concerns raised.
