The government has stepped up efforts to address traffic congestion in Nairobi through the ongoing construction of the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct, a major infrastructure project aimed at improving mobility within the Central Business District (CBD).
The project, being implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), is part of a broader plan to modernise urban transport and enhance efficiency along one of the city’s busiest corridors. Once complete, the viaduct is expected to significantly reduce travel time for motorists entering and exiting the CBD.
According to the State Department for Roads, the elevated roadway is designed to directly link Valley Road to the city centre. By lifting through-traffic above busy junctions, the project will help decongest ground-level intersections that have long been a source of delays for commuters.
Construction works are already visible along the corridor, signalling steady progress. Reinforced concrete pillars and foundational structures have been put in place, while sections of the elevated deck are taking shape, particularly near the NHIF Building area. Engineers on site say the project is advancing in phases, with different segments being developed simultaneously to meet timelines.
The viaduct stretches along Kenyatta Avenue from the Integrity Centre to the Serena Hotel, forming a critical link within Nairobi’s transport network. The design features an elevated dual carriageway of approximately one kilometre, allowing smoother traffic flow above the existing road network.
In addition to easing congestion for motorists, the project also incorporates features that support non-motorised transport. Dedicated cycle lanes and pedestrian walkways are being integrated into the design, reflecting a shift towards inclusive urban planning that accommodates all road users.
Engineers have also factored in modern drainage systems to address the persistent challenge of urban flooding in parts of the city. This is expected to improve the durability of the road infrastructure while enhancing safety during heavy rains.
The State Department for Roads has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports economic growth and improves quality of life. Officials say the Kenyatta Avenue viaduct is a key step towards building a more connected and efficient Nairobi.
Once completed, the project is expected to transform movement within the CBD, offering a faster and more reliable transport option for thousands of daily commuters while easing pressure on existing road networks.
