Juja boda boda SACCOs receive funding boost

Boda boda operators across Juja Sub-County have received a fresh financial boost after the issuance of cheques aimed at strengthening their savings base and improving access to credit through local SACCOs.

The initiative, carried out under the “Kazi na Boda” empowerment programme, targets SACCO groups in Witeithie, Juja, Theta, Murera, and Kalimoni wards. It is part of a broader county-driven effort to strengthen grassroots economic activities and support youth engaged in the transport sector.

Speaking during the exercise, county leadership said the move is designed to enhance financial inclusion among boda boda operators, many of whom rely on daily earnings to sustain their families. By channeling funds through SACCO structures, the programme seeks to promote disciplined savings, easier access to affordable loans, and the expansion of income-generating ventures.

Leaders noted that boda boda SACCOs continue to play a key role in organizing riders, improving accountability, and creating structured financial systems that can support long-term economic stability. They added that empowering SACCOs is one of the most effective ways to reach young people at the grassroots level.

The cheques issued are expected to be used in strengthening the SACCOs’ lending capacity, allowing members to access credit for business expansion, motorcycle maintenance, and small enterprise development. In addition, part of the funds will support collective investment projects that aim to diversify income sources for members beyond daily transport earnings.

Operators who attended the event welcomed the support, saying it will ease financial pressure and help many riders improve their livelihoods. Some noted that access to credit has often been a major challenge, forcing many to rely on informal lenders with high interest rates.

The programme also emphasizes financial discipline and group accountability, with SACCO leadership expected to manage the funds transparently for the benefit of all members. Officials reiterated that monitoring mechanisms will be strengthened to ensure the money is used for its intended purpose.

According to the organisers, the empowerment initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a more inclusive local economy where youth-led enterprises can thrive. They emphasized that boda boda operators remain a critical pillar of daily transport and small-scale trade within Juja and surrounding areas.

As the programme continues, more SACCOs are expected to benefit, with county leadership reaffirming its commitment to supporting grassroots economic empowerment initiatives across Kiambu County.
